Conservative Surgery for Early Breast Cancer

Abstract
Currently, it is well known that breast conservative surgery is as effective as modified radical mastectomy for early breast cancer. We reviewed 12 patients who underwent breast conservative surgery for primary early breast cancer at Maryknoll
Hospital,
form Apr. 1992 to Jun, 1994.
@ES The results were obtained as follows :
@EN 1) All 12 cases were female and the peak incidence of age was the 5th decade.
2) In all patients, the chief complaint was palpable mass and the most frequent site of the mass was upper outer quadrant(9 cases, 75%).
3) The most common pathologic type was invasive ductal carcinoma(6 cases, 50%).
4) According to TNM classification, 7 cases were Stage I and 5 cases were Stage ¥±.
5) Axillary lymph node metastasis was found in 3 cases(25%).
6) All patients received postoperative CMF chemotherapy and tamoxifen therapy and postoperative radiotherapy was performed in 6 cases (50%).
7) The postoperative wound seroma was developed in one case and postradiation sequalae were breast edema in one case and limited motion of shoulder in one case.
8) All patients were satisfied with cosmetic outcome.
9) Average follow up period was 12 months and 1 case was recurred in 10 months after surgery (recurrence rate : 8.3%). This recurred case was treated by salvage mastectomy. During the follow up, no death case was found.
In spite of short follow-up period and small materials, the author may conclude that breast conservative surgery may offer an effective alternative to modified radical mastectomy for patients with early breast cancer.
